SANCHEZ, Antonio Nuñez Ribiero (1699-1783). Autograph letter signed ('R. Sanchez') to [Albrecht von] Haller, St Petersburg, 1 March 174[5], in Latin, 4 pages, 4to, bifolium (tear at fold between the two leaves, light browning).
BOERHAAVE'S LEGACY: Sanchez attempts to smooth over a quarrel over their relations with their late teacher Hermann Boerhaave (1668-1738), urging Haller to concentrate his efforts on completing Boerhaave's great work, the Institutiones Medicae with a second part on pathology, so as to achieve the most absolute book on the theory of the human body, sick and well' -- above all, he is to concentrate his efforts on this, rather than be tempted to excursions into botany and anatomy.
Sanchez was in St Petersburg as physician in ordinary to the Tzarina, Anna Ivanovna. The anatomist, physiologist and poet Albrecht von Haller, a native of Berne, held at this time the chair of medicine, anatomy, botany and surgery at the University of Göttingen, where in spite of Sanchez's advice he successfully carried out a phenomenal programme of work, particularly in botany and anatomy.
