STEPHENSON, George (1781-1848). Autograph letter signed to the Reverend William Turner, Railway Office, Liverpool, 6 April 1827, one page, 4to.

A letter of introduction: Stephenson hopes that William Turner will assist two gentlemen, Mr Oeynhausen and Mr Dechen, who are 'making a Geological tour thro' this country'.

Stephenson had begun the construction of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway the previous year. Ernst Heinrich von Dechen (1800-1889), a German geologist who served in the mining department of the Prussian state until 1864, contributed greatly to geographical literature, and traveled widely to study mining systems in other countries, visiting England and Scotland with Karl von Oeynhausen (1797-1865).
