Lot Essay

The Old Whig contains an early report on "a Match at Cricket on Kennington-Common for a large Sum of Money, between two of the most celebrated Sportsmen in that Game ...." The earlier issue of The Morning Post reports on a match between the Earl of Winchelsea and Sir Horace Mann, while the later one covers a series of matches "under the patronage of his Royal Highness the Duke of York." Cricket is also mentioned in The Gentleman's Magazine for September 1743, pp. 485-486.
