Lot Essay

Abel Grimmer is primarily known for his small paintings of country scenes, which often form part of a series of the Four Seasons or Months of the Year. This lot is one such picture, belonging to a series, together with a Winter, which was decorated with the same acanthus leaf details (sold Sotheby's, New York, 12 January 1989, lot 25), reproduced in B. de Sauvigny, op. cit., p. 284, no. 29, pl. 97.
