A MEISSEN POWDERED-PURPLE GROUND TWO-HANDLED BEAKER AND SAUCER
CIRCA 1735-38, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS MARKS
Painted by C.F. Herold with harbour and landscape scenes, one side of the beaker with a stag hunt, the other with a ship at anchor, within gilt interlocking scrollwork quatrefoil cartouches, the saucer with a galleon at anchor and merchants, within a similar cartouche and with lustre panels enriched with gilt diaper-pattern and gilt, iron-red and purple interlocking foliage scrolls, the interior rim of the beaker and rim of the saucer with gilt zigzag and husk borders (saucer with very slight wear to gilt border and minute wear to cartouche)

Lot Essay

This beaker and saucer is from a service which was dispersed on 25th June 1979, lots 182-192. Two of the six beakers and saucers (lot 186) are now in the Carabelli Collection, Switzerland, and are illustrated by Ulrich Pietsch, 'Frühes Meissener Porzellan, Sammlung Carabelli' Catalogue (Munich, 2000), pp. 228-229, nos. 106-7. One of the two beakers and saucers in lot 184 is now in the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe, Hamburg, and is illustrated by D. Hoffmeister, Katalog der Sammlung Hoffmeister (Hamburg, 1999), Vol. II, no. 274.
