The urn-shaped bodies moulded with pendant drapes suspended from gilt loops and Frauenkopf handles draped in gilt scale headscarves, the lower parts with up-turned gilt stiff-leaves, on domed feet with down-turned gilt foliage and square plinth bases with gilt bun feet and chamfered edges with borders of gilt hatching reserved with palmettes, the flat shoulders with similar borders, the waisted covers with down-turned gilt foliage below pointed gilt knops, central ribbon-tied bands and reversible lower parts formed as nozzles with gilt foliage and fluted spreading stems (areas of wear to gilding, one cover restored and lacquered, other with lacquered repairs to nozzle rim and knop, one vase with minute frit to female's nose, other with two minute frits to edge of rim)

Lot Essay

Cassolettes are extremely rare. For a pair of Berlin cassolettes of a different form, see Erich Köllmann, Berliner Porzellan (Berlin, 1966), Vol. II, pl. 120a. A pair of Frankenthal cassolettes were sold by Sotheby's London on 30th June 1981, lot 184.
