AN ITALIAN ETCHED SKULL FOR A CLOSE HELMET, IN MID-16TH CENTURY STYLE
19th Century
Formed of one piece, rising to an uncabled comb, the base flanged for turning on the rim of the gorget, pierced with pivot holes, studded with lining rivets (the heads ground off), decorated throughout with bands of grotesques, mythical beasts and figures from mythology on a blackened granular ground, bordered by running narrow bands of scrollwork, and retaining traces of gilding.
