A PERSIAN STEEL CUIRASS OF FIVE PLATES (CHAHR'AYNE)
Qajar dynasty, mid-19th Century
The plates joined by pairs of hinges and fitted with buckles for suspension straps front and rear, the frontal defence (sineband) formed of a pair of narrow plates embossed over the breast and fitted with buckles for closure straps, etched over the full surface of each plate with scenes from the Shahnameh, the details and borders picked-out in koftgari, involving figures and motifs from the Life and Trials of the hero Rostam, and retaining two portions of the original lining (the straps and two hinge pins missing, the surface discoloured by old varnish).
