A CASED 20-BORE D.B. PERCUSSION SHOTGUN SIGNED H.W. MORTIMER, LONDON
circa 1830-35
With sighted twist barrels signed on the rib, engraved over the breech and inlaid with platinum lines and plugs, the breech tang engraved with scrollwork on a contrasting matted ground, signed detented locks engraved with scrolls and dentil borders, the lock-plates each extending upwards over the flanks of the breech tang, figured walnut half-stock, chequered grip, steel mounts engraved en suite with the locks, silver escutcheon, and wooden ramrod, London proof marks (the mounts with small patches of rust, ramrod-pipe detached, the ramrod tip and one sling-swivel missing): in original lined and fitted mahogany case bound with four iron bands (a working addition), the lid with brass circular flush-fitting handle and escutcheon (the lid cracked, the joints weakened), with original shot-flask.

Lot Essay

The maker is possibly Henry William Mortimer, son of Jackson Mortimer, recorded working at 4, East Street, Hoxton, from 1823. The quality of the workmanship on the present gun suggests that the signature is not that of an imitator.
