COLUMBO, Matteo Realdo. Anatomia, das ist Sinnreiche, künstliche Auffschneidung, Theilung und Zerlegung eines vollkommenen Menschlichen Leibs und Cörpers... In die teutsche Zung und Sprach ubersetzt. Frankfurt: M. Becker for the heirs of Theodor de Bry, 1609.
2o (299 x 194 mm). Engraved vignette on title, 44 engravings in text (40 full-page), one double-page engraved table. (Some pale browning.) Later limp vellum. Provenance: indecipherable inkstamp on title.
FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN, after the Latin edition of 1559 (see previous lot). It is the first illustrated edition, especially important for "showing the interest given to the movements of the heart and lungs at the Paduan school forty years before Harvey came to study there" (Singer). The present German edition is illustrated with fine anatomical engravings by de Bry after Vesalius. The appendix is of even greater importance, as it is illustrated with Coiter's famous plates of comparative zoological anatomy. These eighteen figures are exact copies of the exceedingly rare first edition of Coiter's Animalium sceletorum explications (Nuremberg, 1575), the "first important work on comparative anatomy" (Wood). RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, the last copy sold at auction was at Sotheby's London, 18 May 1989, lot 202. Choulant-Frank 210; Krivatsy/NLM 2617; Nissen ZBI 921 (note); Waller 2075. See Garrison-Morton 378.1.
