This unusual compartmentalized box and cover is related to a similarly configured box illustrated in Catalogue of a Special Exhibition of Hindustan Jade in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1983, pp. 240-1, pl. 59. It has five petals or leaves radiating outwards from the sides and tip of a sixth tear-drop-shaped compartment. A shallow dish with four tri-lobed petals, similar to those of the present box is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - 42 - Jadeware (III), Hong Kong, 1995, p. 273, no. 225. See, also, the five-petaled dish of related type with similar serrated slender leaves and small similar flower head incorporated into the design, illustrated by Joseph M. Dye III, The Arts of India, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, 2001, p. 413, no. 187. Dated as 18th century, the author is undecided whether it is North Indian or Chinese.
