LATE 19TH CENTURY
Of oval shape, with shallow flaring sides carved as petals, each outlined in gold wire and decorated with a flower stem above an oval band of foliate scroll below, all in gold wire and foil-backed gemstones, the flat base carved with a flower head, the stone of greenish-white color with some opaque brown and buff mottling
6 1/8 in. (15.5 cm.) long

Lot Essay

A jade dish of this shape described as Mughal and of 18th century date, but inlaid in gold and gemstones in the center with a single flowering poppy plant, was included in the exhibition, Passion and Tranquility, Spink & Son Ltd., London, 12 October - 12 November 1998, p. 42, no. 24.
