With lobed corners, the top of the cover carved with butterflies flitting amidst various flowering branches and flower stems reserved against a diaper ground within an outer key-fret border, the sides with panels of flowers reserved on a different diaper ground, repeated on the sides of the lower section which is raised on bracket supports, the interior top of the lower section incised with interlocking scrolls surrounding eight circular recesses to hold bowls, with black lacquered interiors and base

Lot Essay

The unusual shape of this box is similar to that of a painted enamel box fitted on the interior with sweetmeat trays, of similar large size (49.5 cm.), dated to the Qianlong period, included in the exhibition, Tributes from Guandong to the Qing Court, Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 28 February - 12 April 1987, p. 87, no. 49.
