A Do-Maru Suit of Armor
The helmet Muromachi period (16th century), the armor Edo period (17th-18th century)
The entire armor lacquered gold and laced in blue with pale orange highlights and comprising a thirty-two plate iron akoda-nari suji kabuto lacquered black and mounted with gilt-metal fukurin, igaki (ornamental edging and plates at the base of each flange) and shinodare (decorative metal strips) on the front and rear plates, the bowl surmounted with a four-stage gilt-metal chrysanthemum tehen kanamono tilted slightly forward in typical Muromachi-period style, and a decorative ring on the rear, the bowl fitted with a four-lame neck guard with chrysanthemum bosses on the rivets at the base of the helmet bowl, and metal edging carved with floral scroll applied to the bottom lame, small fuki-gaeshi mounted with gilt-metal crests of the Kuyo family and trimmed with fukurin, gilt-metal kuwagata-dai carved with chrysanthemums and fitted with gilt-metal sanko and Buddhist-ken kuwagata; the black lacquered-iron face mask forged with deep wrinkles and a hinged nose piece and applied with a boar-bristle moustache, the mask fitted with a three-lame throat guard; a two-lame nodowa; the cuirass with stencilled doe skin applied to the muna-ita, waki-ita, oshitsuke no ita and sendan no ita and kyubi no ita and the top edges lined with decorative gilt-metal edging, the cuirass fitted with seven sections of five-lame tassets; large o-sode mounted with gilt-metal and hardware and Kuyo family crests; tsutsu gote with ridged plates; lacquered-leather haidate and tsutsu suneate; two wood storage boxes; wood armor stand
