The 'Four Elements' (1635) by F. Albani were painted for the cardinal of Savoy who later became King of Sardinia. They are presently exhibited in the Galleria Sabauda in Turin. The cup is based on an engraving by Hérisset inspired by this series. cf. F.& N.Hervouët et Y.Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes, p.318, fig.13.92;
The decoration of the saucer is based on an engraving by I.de Bensérade for S.le Clerc, "Ovid's Metamorphoses", published in 1676, H. Glatz, London. cf. F.& N. Hervouët et Y.Bruneau, op.cit, p.303, fig.13.45
