A Cantonese ivory letter rack, 19th century
formed of five shelves flanked by two supports in the centre of a backplate, carved and pierced with foliate lotus blossoms and scrolls, carp, birds and other animals, figures carrying peach, under trees, in terraced gardens and boats; and an ivory letter opener, the handle carved with Xiwangmu ('Queen mother of the West') holding a vase with a deer by her side, the blade carved in low relief with a Qilin, bird, butterflies, finger citron and peach sprays and a boy and a man with a lotus spray and a box, reserved on a trellis ground -- the letter opener 11¼in. (28.5cm.) long. (2)
