Lot Essay

Accompanied by Patek Philippe cardboard slipcase, leather-covered box, informational pamphlet and instructions. The watch is also accompanied by an Extract from the Patek Philippe Archives confirming the date of manufacture as 1976 and its subsequent sale on March 30th, 1979.

According to our research the present watch has never before appeared at auction.

The reference 3448 was introduced to the market in 1962 as the first self-winding perpetual calendar wristwatch. Patek Philippe produced 582 pieces in yellow, pink and white gold. The platinum 3448 is extremely rare with only two examples known to date.

The reference 3448 was made with the caliber 27-460 movement considered by watch aficionados as one of the most sophisticated automatic movements ever made. It was later upgraded with Patek Philippe's patented perpetual calendar mechanism fitted on the movement plate underneath the dial and renamed 27-460 Q.

In 1981 Patek Philippe introduced the reference 3450 with the improved 27-460 QB caliber movement. This model differed from its predecessor with the addition of leap year indication. The first series was made with a red disc and Arabic numerals, the second with Roman I, II, III and IIII leap year indication.

Production of both of these references, the 3448 and the 3450, was discontinued in 1985 with the launch of the reference 3940.
