THE DIAL SIGNED EDWARD WOODWARD, LONDON, 18TH CENTURY AND LATER
The hood with rebuilt caddy top flanked by later finials and with blind-fret panel below, glazed panels to the sides, the pine front with inset brass-capped capitals, the trunk with raised gilt chinoiserie decoration to its door (remnants of paper label to inside) and the plinth with conforming decoration; the 7½ in. (19 cm.) wide brass dial with engraved borders and with replaced cherub spandrels, silvered chapter ring with fleur-de-lys half hour and diamond half quarter hour markers, signed Edward Woodward/Shoemaker London, matted center with engraved borders to date aperture and to aperture for unusual sliding Strike/Silent sector, black painted steel hands, the arch with foliate scroll engraving flanking a later ring for tidal moon and with phase indications, with replaced brass hand; the associated four pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack strike on bell, with later seatboard and resting on cut-away cheekboards; composite, the case early 18th Century, with alterations to hood and refreshments to decoration, the dial early 18th Century with alterations, the movement late 19th Century
