Each within an elaborate gilt and panelled neoclassic border, the first finely painted with a view of Achilles in an encampment, the second with a mythological view of Jupiter disguised as Diana with Calypso, identified in German on the reverse; the third with 'Kaiser Heinrich V, Lüsst Seinen Sohn Schwören' painted with an historical view of Henry IV, his son at his side, pledging an oath of loyalty

Lot Essay

As a Huguenot, Henry IV of France was involved in the Wars of Religion before ascending to the throne in 1589. In 1598 he enacted the Edict of Nantes which guaranteed religious liberties to the Protestants and thereby effectively ended the civil war. One of the most popular French kings, both during and after his reign, Henry showed great care for the welfare of his subjects and displayed an unusual degree of religious tolerance for the time.
