MILEVA MUST MOVE FROM SWITZERLAND TO GERMANY. The exchange rate has fallen to 5 marks to the franc, and it is no longer possible for Einstein to send his accustomed subvention of 8000 francs: 'It is therefore necessary for you to move to German territory, and as quickly as possible. But there is nothing in this for you to be afraid of. Constance for example is at least as beautiful as Zurich'; he himself would help find a flat, the schools are excellent, and the quality of their lives would not suffer a bit. The decision however cannot wait any longer, 'Auch meine todkranke Mutter muss ich hierher nehmen [Even my mortally ill mother needs to come and join me here]'. Changing circumstances mean that he cannot be sure how much he can provide for his family, 'But as before I will take care that you can live in a comfortable and proper way'.

In spite of the worsening exchange-rate crisis into the early 1920s, Einstein had no success in persuading Mileva to leave Zurich.
