The rectangular box with flush-fitting cover decorated in gold togidashi-e on a black ground with sparse nashiji, depicting flowers and grasses, the interior with butterflies among grasses, lead rims

Lot Essay

This box is probably an example of a Hanare, a small box that once formed part of a large set of lacquer utensils, but was later used independantly in tea-or incense- ceremonies.
