School of Ogata Korin, Edo Period (17th century)
The rectangular box and flush-fitting cover decorated in gold hiramaki-e and inlaid in lead and mother-of-pearl on a black ground, with a stag among grasses, the interior with an inner tray decorated with maples and inset with a lacquered copper water dropper, the interior of the cover with a poem (see below) in gold hiramaki-e, fundame-rimmed slate inkstone, the deep box beneath in black lacquer, fundame and lead rims
