The present work is a study for the oil of the same title painted in 1948. Sutherland discovered the landscape around Tourette-sur-Loup, not far from Vence, whilst exploring the Riviera with Francis Bacon. The rocks and grasses of a dried-up river bed were to be a fruitful source of ideas. The same landscape was to be one of the inspirations, in 1950, for his monumental canvas Origins of the Land (Tate, London).
