3 vols, 8° (208 x 134mm). (Occasional light browning.) Contemporary half sheep and marbled boards, with the original wrappers printed on blue paper bound-in, spines gilt lettered (repairs, gilt perished). Provenance: Library of the Odessa Institute (stamps).

The first appearance in print of Leskov's Cathedral Folk -- one of the major works by this mentor of Chekhov, and whom Gorsky championed. Leskov 'is generally recognized by Russians as the most Russian of Russian writers and the one who had the deepest and widest knowledge of the Russian people as it actually is' (Mirsky).
