MAP -- MURCHISON, Roderick Impey (1792-1871) and others. Two geological maps of Russia. London and Paris: John Arrowsmith for John Murray and P. Bertrand, 1845.
2 folding hand-coloured lithographed wall maps (650 x 815mm and 564 x 440mm), dissected in 12 panels and in 4 panels, mounted on linen and edged in green cloth. (Light even browning.) In a contemporary green morocco slipcase, spine title in gilt, sides centred with the Imperial arms, wide gilt frame (light rubbing, a few scuffs). Provenance: Leuchtenberg.
THE FIRST IMPORTANT GEOLOGICAL MAP OF RUSSIA, IN A GREEN MOROCCO SLIPCASE GILT WITH THE IMPERIAL ARMS. The splendid slipcase which houses these maps suggests that these once formed part of an imperial collection or may have been presented by Nicholas I, who commissioned Murchison's survey. These two maps, 'Russia in Europe and the Ural Mountains' and 'The Ural Mounains', detailing this mineral-rich region, were published as plates VI and VII in Murchison's The Geology of Russia in Europe and the Ural Mountains (1845).
