A FINELY CARVED WHITE JADE BOWL
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

Of circular form supported on four rectangular feet, carved around the steep interior and exterior sides in low relief with swallows in flight among gnarled flowering camellia branches, the darker and opaque inclusions cleverly used and disguised as part of the rising branches, the bowl divided by a pair of elaborate winged dragon handles suspending loose-rings, the stone of a semi-translucent tone with a creamy tinge and scattered opaque inclusions

The use of inclusions in the carved decoration and the sparsely decorated flawless side of the bowl is demonstrative of the carver's technical skill. The use of slightly flawed material on a carving of this high quality would point towards an early 18th century date when good quality flawless white jade material of this size would have been less readily available than later in the century.
