A Longquan celadon jar, Guan, 15th/16th Century
the squat baluster-shaped jar heavily potted, the body moulded with vertical ribs extending from the short neck to the foot with separate plugged base, the characteristically olive-green glaze suffused with a network of crackles - 12¾in. (32.4cm.) diam.

Examples of similar Longquan ribbed jars of various sizes were recovered from a wreck of A.D. 1330 off the Southeast coast of Korea, as illustrated by Gompertz, Chinese Celadon Wares, London, 1980, pl.99B, p185. Others from the collection of the Ottoman sultans are published by Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, Catalogue, vol. 1, nos. 212 and 213.
