A FINELY CARVED 'MYTHICAL BEAST' SOAPSTONE SEAL
XIANFENG PERIOD, DATED TO 1851 AND OF THE PERIOD

Of columnar form, the upper part of the seal carved with a recumbent mythical beast seated on a rockwork ground, its body turned to one side, finely modelled with bulging eyes, mouth agape, long mane and a bushy tail, supported on a square platform, inscribed on one vertical side with Yudaoren Wuchun, and further incised with Xianfeng Yuannian liuyue shiyire Xizai, '(Carved) by Xizai on the eleventh day of the six month in the first year of Xianfeng', the base bearing a nine-character seal chop in baiwen, intaglio

拍品專文

The carver is identified as the artist Wu Tingyang (1799-1870) whose zi, style names were known as Xizai and Rangzhi. Wu obtained an official government title of Juren; and is recorded in Zhongguo Meishujia Renming Cidian, Shanghai renmin meishu chubanshe, 2003, p. 285. From the characters of the seal chop, the present seal was presented to Master Ling Yurui as "a token for fortune and longevity".
