DICKENS'S FECKLESS BROTHER. Frederick has attempted to counter an objection on Dickens's part to standing security for him in a financial transaction, but other objections remain: 'I will not say that I have not the confidence I could desire, in you, as to money matters. It is enough for me to say, that I know enough of the world to have a horror of the very name -- security. If I were security for you, and you were false to me, you never could pay me back the value of that broken trust, and never could set up my confidence again'. Dickens proposes (without committing himself) replacing Frederick's scheme with one whereby he stood 'security for you to a life office, on the Insurance of both our lives', whereby a loan could be raised which could be repaid yearly, so that 'instead of loading yourself with irons for life, you could wear them for an ascertained number of years'.
