Daughter of Tsar Ivan V Alekseevich and step-niece of Peter the Great, she was married in 1710 to Duke Friedrich Wilhelm of Courland and widowed in 1711. She succeeded Peter II Alekseevich in 1730, and made herself unpopular with her arrogance and Baltic German court. This portrait is based loosely on the originals by Louis Caravaque.
