Somov was often invited to Château des Touches, the estate of Baron Nolde. Here we lived a real Russian life, a landlord's life, with real simple hospitality, old-fashioned old women, complete freedom. And an ancient, neglected Russian park.
As a nature lover, the landscape artist Somov was not able to remain indifferent: There were lots of subjects to paint and I was able to do some studies, if only I had brought my oil paints with me...I began to draw in pencil...I hope that these landscapes will act as a starting point for my own compositions if I don't leave them too long and forget the impressions that they made upon me.
