Lot Essay

'Le Livre de la Marquise' was originally published in Germany in 1907 as 'Lesebuch der Marquise'. In 1918 Golike and Vilborg published a French translation in St Peterburg which included further illustrations and vignettes by Somov and even erotic texts from the 18th and 19th Centuries chosen by the artist himself.
