Launched in 1971, the Sea Dweller 2000 is the first diver's watch equipped with a Rolex patent valve in the band. When the internal pressure of the watch is higher than the ambient pressure in the decompression chamber, the escape valve releases helium and other gases trapped in the movement, preventing an explosion of the crystal. This mechanism enables the watch to withstand compression up to a depth of 610 metres.

The Sea Dweller model with red printing and "Submariner 2000" inscription were the initial versions of the Submariner. Production ceased in 1973.
