DAYTONA The Rolex Daytona, a bestseller on the international watch market, was first produced in 1966. First released models were the reference 6263 and 6265. The 6263 was generally fitted with a black bezel, and 6265 with a stainless steel engraved bezel. However, there are in fact many more variations in regards to the feature of the early Daytonas, apart from different bezels, they vary by dial colour schemes and different "Daytona" printings. The two references were discontinued in1987. In 1988, Rolex released the Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona with references 16520, 16523 and 16528. A new model, the reference 16518, was later produced in 1992. Until the new updated 2000 Daytona model, the movement was provided by Zenith, using the EL PRIMERO calibre. The so-called "Paul Newman Daytona" watch possesses the distinctive dial design made famous by the actor Paul Newman, initially reported to have been wearing the watch in the film, Le Mans. He has also been seen sporting the same style of dial in general publicity shots. As a result, the Rolex Daytona and Cosmograph models with this dial were commonly known as Paul Newmans.

Cal. 727 nickel-finished lever movement, 17 jewels, mono-metallic balance adjusted in 3 positions, the silvered brushed dial with applied baton numerals with luminous dot accents, outer 1/5th minute divisions, three black subsidiary dials indicating constant seconds, 30 minutes and 12 hours registers, in tonneau-shaped water-resistant-type case with black bezel calibrated for units per hour, two screw down chronograph buttons in the band, screw down crown and screw back, together with a stainless steel Rolex bracelet and deployant clasp, case, dial and movement signed
37 mm. diam.
