Château Haut-Brion--Vintage 1988
Pessac (Graves), 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Tasting note: First tasted 26th November 1990, three days before it was due to be bottled. Full of colour, fruit, extract, velvety yet very tannic. Next tasted dining at 'Nick's' (quite posh) after my son Bartholomew's port tasting in Jackson, Mississippi, April 1997: fleshy but unready. The following year at the Penning-Rowsell's, still fairly intense and immature. Decanted at 7.10 pm it was, as always, the first of the eight first growths to be poured (at 7.55 pm). It took half an hourfor the nose to start opening up, and a further half hour to settle into its harmonious warm, bricky tea-like routine. Slightly singed flavour, good length, dry and a bit raw on the finish. Most recently, at the MW Haut-Brion tasting: a thick core but maturing: a floral,citrus-like nose, but the lowest key of the trio '88,'89,'90, and nothing like as splendid as the '85 and the '82. Nevertheless, a silky tannic texture and mocha-like acidity. Last tasted Jan 2000 **(*) but might shed its astringency Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
