ENGINEER ROBERT E. LEE requisitions curtains for a floating office on the Mississippi. After graduation from West Point, Lee had been appointed Second Lieutenant of Engineers, and served in various posts. In 1835 he was attached to the team surveying the boundary between Michigan and Ohio. Promoted to first Lieutenant in 1837, he was assigned to St. Louis, where under the supervision of Lieutenant (later General) Montgomery C. Meigs (1816-1892), he was employed on engineering projects to improve navigation along the banks of the Mississippi. Here, he issues a requisition: "I certify that the articles above charged were applied and necessary to the improvement of the Mississippi river above the mouth of the Ohio." The requisition specifies that cloths ordered here are for "curtains to that cabin of the U.S. Boat Pearl used as an office & drawing room," and "are rendered necessary by the want of Blinds to keep out the Sun and Light."
