2o (369 x 262 mm). Engraved title, full-page engraved portrait of Tensini, 48 etched plates by Odoardo Fialetti (10 folding, or double, numbered 1-23, 23+, 24-32, 32+, 33-36, 36+, 37-44). (Some browning and spotting to the text, some small marginal tears, light soiling and thumbing and a wormhole in p. 127 not affecting the images.) Contemporary full vellum with yapp edges, spine in five compartments with four raised bands, manuscript title and flower design in ink, fore-edge speckled green (lacking silk ties, lightly soiled, edges a bit creased). Provenance: D. Carolus Gaddins (contemporary signature below the colophon).
FIRST EDITION of this influential work on fortification. Three further editions were published during the 17th century: 1630, 1655 (quarto) and a Turin edition in 1674. The plates by Fialetti have a refreshing freedom which is unusual for military manuals of this era. Cockle 813; Parenti p. 485.
