the leaf worked with a bridge across a stream with swans beneath and lovers leaning against the ballustrades, the ivory sticks carved with a narrative vignette of a courtier asking a lady to dance, dancing with her and finally mopping his brow from his exertions, the guard sticks carved wtih love birds and putti, the sticks carved to show cupid's bow and flaming arrows with a dove above to one side, and the dancing courtier on the other, in Duvelroy box

Lot Essay

This fan is an example of the finest Italian revivalist lacemaking, such as was produced by the Burano school in the late 19th century. It is an example of a classical 18th century design worked to the highest specifications by 19th century lace makers.
