A PAIR OF LATE LOUIS XVI ORMOLU AND BRASS-MOUNTED MAHOGANY DEMI-LUNE COMMODES
PROBABLY RUSSIAN, IN THE MANNER OF HEINRICH GAMBS, LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY
Each with a grey-veined white marble top, above a frieze mounted with interspersed palmettes and floral sprays, centred by a lion's mask and fitted with a drawer, above two drawers decorated with an octagonal beaded panel, the angles set with foliate sprays, the shaped sides with conformingly-decorated doors and enclosing a shelf each, on square tapering legs terminating in block feet, remounted, the marble tops probably later

Lot Essay

With its distinctive brass inlay and characteristic ormolu mounts, this elegant pair of commodes is closely related to the oeuvre of Heinrich Gambs (1765-1831), cabinet-maker to the Russian court, following designs by the court architect and designer Andrei Voronikhin (1759-1814), notably to their pieces supplied to Pavlovsk around 1803-04 (A. Chenevière, Russian Furniture, London, 1989, pp. 155-177).
A related pair of demi-lune commodes was sold from the collection of Edmond and Lily Safra, Sotheby's, New York, 3-4 November 2005, lot 587.
