With its distinctive brass inlay and characteristic ormolu mounts, this elegant pair of commodes is closely related to the oeuvre of Heinrich Gambs (1765-1831), cabinet-maker to the Russian court, following designs by the court architect and designer Andrei Voronikhin (1759-1814), notably to their pieces supplied to Pavlovsk around 1803-04 (A. Chenevière, Russian Furniture, London, 1989, pp. 155-177).
