An octagonal tray or spoon rest, probably from this service, was sold in these Rooms on 7th February 1977, lot 225.
Near complete services with chinoiserie decoration from this period are very rare indeed. This service is similar in spirit to the celebrated armorial service made for Clemens August of Bavaria, Archbishop of Cologne (see the beaker and saucer in this sale, lot 105, which is dated 1735), which also incorporates Purpurmalerei vignettes in the supports, and the present service almost certainly dates from a similar period. There are also similarities to the armorial services made for the Althann and Daun and the Trotha families, which are thought to date from circa 1735 and 1730-35 respectively. Both services have similar arrangements of figures on supports incorporating Böttger-lustre panels and edged with iron-red and purple feathered scrolls.
