Lot Essay

This figure is part of a Commedia dell'Arte series which was modelled in 1764-65 before Wenzel Neu returned to Fulda in 1767. The series was modelled after the engravings by Johann B. Probst, which were adapted from the drawings by Johann Jacob Schübler and published by Jeremias Wolffs Erben at Augsburg in 1729. This figure of Harlequin was derived from pl. 5.

Other examples were sold in these Rooms on 9th July 2001, lot 253, and with his companion Columbine on 11th December 2000, lot 285, and on 14th May 1990, lot 35. An example was sold by Christie's Geneva on 11th November 1985, lot 42. Another was sold by Sotheby's Geneva on 14th November 1989, lot 62; and another by Hans W. Lange, Berlin on 7-9th April 1938, lot 916. The example in the Pflueger Collection is illustrated by Hugo Morley-Fletcher, The Pflueger Collection (London, 1993), Vol. I, p. 206.
