Lot Essay

The fluent pen work, wash and exaggerated foreshortening of the present drawing are characteristic of Canuti and can be compared to a number of sheets including one in the Louvre of A battle scene (inv. 12351). Another almost identical drawing of Rinaldo and Armida is also in the Louvre (inv. 12351), suggesting that Canuti may have worked on a series of drawings for Torquato Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata.
