Popham and Lloyd suggested attributions to Carlo Maratta and Andrea Sacchi as well as Bernini, but consider the drawing closest to the work of the latter because of its high quality and similarities to other drawings by the artist in the same medium (see A. Blunt and H.L. Cooke, The Drawings of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen at Windsor Castle, London, 1960, no. 54; and N. Turner, Italian Baroque Drawings, London, 1980, no. 10).
