The case with recessed 'funnel' top and leaf-cast tie to folding square section handle, bevelled glasses, with matted and engraved foliate mask to white enamel Roman chapter disc, subsidiary seconds at XII, signed DENT/LONDON, blued steel moon hands, the movement with single chain fusee, maintaining power, gilt platform with underslung Earnshaw-type chronometer escapement, Dent's staple balance and blued steel helical spring, sliding rear glass with release to the base, the back plate with repeat signature and numbered 702; with original gilt-tooled green leather travel case, case key

A Dent chronometer carriage clock of closely related design (No.12383) was sold Sotheby's London, Clocks, Watches, Barometers, Mechanical Music and Scientific Instruments, 14 December 2006, lot 21. Edward Dent (1790-1853) patented his 'staple' balance in 1842, not long after setting up in business on his own at 82 Strand.
