A Sendai-Style Suit of Armor
Edo period (19th century)
Russet-iron, laced in blue and comprising a twenty-two plate suji-bachi mounted with a four-stage chrysanthemum tehen kanamono and a three-stage neck guard with large turnbacks applied with stenciled doe skin, the peak mounted with a kuwagata-dai formed as a Buddhist ken and engraved with scrolling vines, kuwagata gilt-metal, the face mask with a hinged nose plate and applied with a bushy animal hair moustache and fitted with a four-lame solid-plate throat guard, the bottom lame laced in orange; the five-plate russet-iron tate-hagi do decorated with the heraldic crest of the Date family on the front and mounted with gilt-metal hardware carved with floral vines, the do fitted with seven sections of five-lame tassets lacquered russet-brown and laced on the bottom lames in green and orange; chu-sode lacquered russet-brown; tsutsu gote sleeves with rows of bosses hammered up from the plates; tsutsu haidate matching the sleeves; shino suneate; mount for standard; one armor box decorated with the Date family crest, matching that on the cuirass; no armor stand
