8o (170 x 104 mm). Title-page printed in red and blue. (Lightly browned, one or two spots, a few pale stains.) Original green cloth, covers decorated in blind with border of triple fillet, broad border of arches, with a flower at each corner, inner border of single fillet with scallop at each inside corner, spine with blind double fillet at head and foot and title lettered in gilt, pale yellow endpapers, uncut (extremities bumped, head and foot of spine a bit rubbed, a few stains, spine a bit browned and slightly cocked). FIRST EDITION, UNCUT IN UNRECORDED VARIANT BINDING. Overs, a poor carpenter dying of consumption, composed several poems and verses and applied to Dickens for help in getting them published. A few appeared with Dickens's influence in Tait's Edinburgh Magazine and eventually in this volume for which Dickens corrected proofs and wrote the preface. Published copies are recorded bound in brown cloth and trimmed. The Dexter collection in the British Library holds a proof copy, also uncut.
