8o (220 x 142 mm). Etched frontispiece, vignette title-page, and 38 plates by Hablot K. Browne ["Phiz"] (some occasional spotting). (Some occasional offsetting from plates.) Parrish (1867-1944), American book collector (bookplate); Oliver Brett, third Viscount Esher (1881-1963) (bookplate; his sale, Sotheby's London, 26 March 1946, lot 526); Kenyon Starling (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, FIRST ISSUE, with "Rigaud" for "Blandois" on pp. 469-474, but without the additional 9-line errata. Little Dorrit was Dickens' second commentary, after Pickwick Papers, on the outdated practice of imprisonment for debt. Despite bad reviews from many critics, the book was a popular success.
