DICKENS, Charles. The Plays and Poems of Charles Dickens, with a Few Miscellanies in Prose. Edited by Richard Herne Shepherd. London: W.H. Allen, 1882.

2 volumes, 8o (218 x 138 mm). Half-titles. Red morocco, spines gilt, edges gilt, original blue cloth covers and spines bound in at end, by Riviere. Provenance: Kenyon Starling.

FIRST COLLECTED EDITION, THE EXTREMELY SCARCE SUPPRESSED FIRST ISSUE, containing No Thoroughfare (on pages [67]-180 in vol. 2), withdrawn from sale because of copyright difficulties. According to a note in the McCutcheon sale (AAA, 21-22 April 1926, lot 251) there were both ordinary (as here) and large-paper copies of this book, the large-paper copies being distinguished by a border added to all pages (only twelve large-paper copies are thought to exist). The collection includes six plays, sixteen poems and six miscellaneous prose pieces, including "The Lamplighter's Story" and "Sunday Under Three Heads." Richard Herne Shepherd's introduction contains numerous reminiscences of Dickens as actor and playwright. A bibliography of Dickens's works published between 1833 and 1882 is appended to the second volume. SCARCE: according to American Book Prices Current, no copies of the first issue have sold at auction in at least thirty years. Yale/Gimbel D96 (the McCutcheon copy of the limited edition). (2)
