The cup painted in sepia with a quarter-length portrait of Queen Karoline of Bavaria wearing a plumed cap and Renaissance-style dress within an oval gilt line cartouche, the sides and saucer border with gilt tooled flower-sprays, gilt band rims (areas of gilding possbily retouched near footrim)

拍品專文

Queen Karoline (1776-1841), daughter of Karl Ludwig Prince of Baden, was the second wife of Maximilian Duke of Zweibrücken, who later became Elector and then King of Bavaria. Her brother Karl, Second Grand Duke of Baden, married Stéphanie de Beauharnais (see lot 241). The portrait on the present coffee-can is taken from a print by Johann Nepomuk Strixner after the painting by Joseph Karl Stieler.
