Of rounded form with melon-fluted sides rising to the cusped rim, on short foot, the body moulded with a meandering band of alternating palmettes, applied pale manganese glass ring handle with extruded thumbpiece, areas of iridescence, a few repaired clean breaks

This glass cup is very well decorated. Its execution and the colour of the glass link it to a small number of vessels decorated with alternately facing palmettes sprouting from a meandering band such as one in the al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait (Stefano Carboni, Glass from the Islamic Lands, London, 2000, no.59, pp.222-3 where he also give references to two other examples in the Museum f,r Islamische Kunst, Berlin and in the Iran Bastan Museum). Helen Kordmahini publishes a second very comparable design on an olive-green vessel which she dates to the early Islamic period (Helen Kordmahini, Glass from the Bazargan Collection, Tehran, 1994, p.64). The fruiting vine scroll seen here is very much a feature of the early Islamic period, but the colour and in particular the decoration along the handle mean that a later date is more probable. A jug with similar design was offered in these Rooms on 16th October 2001 (lot 295).
